Outdoor Living Spaces that Support Wellness

How to Design for Life Beyond the Walls

We believe a truly healthy home isn’t confined to the indoors. Wellness-centered living includes the spaces outside your walls—those natural extensions of your home where peace, connection, and restoration flourish.

We often talk about bringing the outdoors in, but the inverse is equally powerful. Creating intentional outdoor living spaces that invite you to spend more time in the fresh air, fully at home.

Whether it’s a stone fireplace with a covered living area or a patio that flows directly from your living room, outdoor spaces should offer both comfort and function while enhancing your connection to nature.

Creating a Sanctuary in Nature

One of our favorite outdoor living projects is the Falstone Residence. This covered living area nestled in a leafy setting features:

  • A natural stone fireplace for warmth and ambiance

  • Woven lounge chairs with soft, weather-friendly cushions

  • Earth-toned accents and candlelight for a grounded atmosphere

It’s a space designed for gathering, quiet mornings, and reconnecting with nature—all key aspects of a wellness-focused lifestyle..

Wellness Tip: Just 20 minutes a day spent outside can reduce stress, improve sleep, and support mental health. Designing spaces that make outdoor time easy and enjoyable helps make that habit stick.

Indoor Comfort, Outdoor Flexibility

At the Wynne Residence, we created an outdoor lounge area that blends seamlessly with the home’s interior. This space extends directly from the main living room and includes:

  • A sleek, modern stone fireplace with integrated TV

  • Plush, rounded chairs for lounge-worthy comfort

  • Retractable screens that open or close based on the weather—or the bugs!

  • Layered textures and potted plants to bring in natural warmth

This patio is perfect for family movie nights, quiet retreats, or hosting guests year-round. And thanks to its flexibility, it’s functional no matter the season.

5 Tips for Wellness-Focused Outdoor Living

Thinking of transforming your outdoor space? Here are a few Shine-tested ideas to get started:

  1. Design With Purpose

Start by defining how you’ll use your space: entertaining, resting, working, or dining? Let function drive your layout

  2. Blend Indoor and Outdoor Style

Use similar materials, color palettes, or lighting to create flow between your indoor and outdoor living areas.

  3. Choose Performance with Comfort

Opt for performance fabrics and durable finishes that are cozy and resilient. Outdoor comfort shouldn’t be a compromise.

4. Include Lighting Layers

Incorporate overhead lights, lanterns, and task lighting to extend use into the evening.

5. Plan for Flexibility

Retractable screens, ceiling fans, and covered areas ensure your outdoor space works in every season.
